The Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) organized the 21st Students’ Martyrdom Day on August 16, 2025, in memory of Pebam Chittaranjan Mangang, who sacrificed his life in protest against the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). Chittaranjan self-immolated on August 15, 2004, and succumbed to his injuries the following day, becoming a powerful symbol of youth resistance against state militarization in Manipur.
The commemorative event began with floral tributes at his memorial site located at Takhellambam Leikai, Sega Road in Imphal West, followed by a silent rally that passed through Keishampat Junction and culminated at Imphal College. A public meeting was held there, addressing the continued imposition of AFSPA in the region despite decades of public opposition.
Alongside MSF, several other civil society organizations were present at the event, including the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), Coalition on Human Rights (COHR), National Research Centre (NRC), and ASIDA. Speakers from these organizations paid tribute to Chittaranjan’s sacrifice and reiterated their collective demand for the immediate repeal of AFSPA from Manipur and other parts of the Northeast.
During the meeting, AMUCO president Ph. Nando Luwang strongly criticized the Indian government for ignoring the decades-long demand of the people, saying:
“It has been 21 years since Pebam Chittaranjan set himself on fire, yet the Centre continues to turn a blind eye to the suffering and injustice inflicted on our people through AFSPA.”
The event served as a renewed call for justice, peace, and the protection of human rights in Manipur, while also reinforcing the commitment of youth and civil society to keep the memory of Chittaranjan alive and to continue his struggle.
